How the 2025 Australian Cheaper Home Batteries Program Works

Starting 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is launching the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a game-changing initiative to help households, small businesses, and community organisations install solar battery systems with substantial upfront discounts.

What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The program is part of a $2.3 billion national investment to support energy storage uptake. It provides an upfront discount of around 30% on the cost of installing an eligible home battery system, helping more Australians take control of their energy use and lower their power bills.

The discount is delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) by creating and selling Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on a battery’s usable capacity.

How the Discount Works

  • The government will fund the discount by purchasing STCs created from eligible batteries.

  • Each battery installation earns a set number of STCs based on usable capacity (up to 50 kWh).

  • These STCs are worth approximately $40 each in 2025.

  • The effective discount is estimated at $372 per kWh of usable capacity in 2025 (e.g. a 9 kWh battery may receive about $3,348 in discounts).

  • The rebate value will decrease each year until 2030.

Who Is Eligible?

To access the rebate:

  • The battery must be installed on or after 1 July 2025.

  • The battery must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh in nominal capacity.

  • It must be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved battery list.

  • The installer must be accredited through Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).

  • The system must be installed with a new or existing solar PV system—batteries without solar are not eligible.

  • On-grid systems must be VPP-capable, though participation in a VPP is optional.

Can I Add to an Existing Battery?

Yes — if:

  • The system hasn’t previously received a rebate under this program.

  • The added capacity is at least 5 kWh, and the total system stays under 100 kWh.

Battery and Inverter Compatibility

  • Existing inverters can be used if they are still on the CEC approved list or were not removed due to safety concerns.

  • If your system is older, Shoalhaven Solar can assess whether upgrades are needed to qualify.

Why Pair a Battery with Your Solar?

Adding battery storage lets you:

  • Store your solar power for evening use or blackouts

  • Protect yourself from rising electricity prices

  • Improve energy independence

  • Participate in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) for extra savings or earnings
